Results of challenge #42

16 ‘mites participated and racked up an average score of only 57.5%, on par with the toughest challenges to date.

The results are as follows:
Two ‘mites scored 3
three scored 4
eight scored 5
and three got 6

Image

#1 – Botha’s lark [5] . The pink bill limits this bird to a few larks (most IDs said lark…). Rudd’s would a buff stripe down the centre of its crown; pink-billed of similar shade uppers would be a lot darker underneath; Stark’s is a much paler bird; so, only Botha’s remain in that process of elimination.

Image

#2 – Orange ground thrush [16] . No problem!

Image

#3 – Olive bush-shrike, buff form, female [1] .

I am feeling a bit dumbstruck by the lack of correct answers. Just shows how much one depends on seeing the whole bill in being able to make an ID call. Just the tiniest bit of the tip is obscured and the give-away hook couldn’t tell its story. When you know the answer all the features fall nicely into place, hey!

BTW, that bite was quite painful!

Image

#4 – Plain-backed pipit (f) [12] . The yellow base to the bill combined with the richly coloured underparts tell the story

Image

#5 – Woodward’s batis, female [8] . Can only be confused with a Cape batis that has dark russet breast band and wing flashes, not the diffuse rufous of the challenge bird.

Image

#6 – African Jacana, juvenile [14] . With only two incorrect answers, there were little issues with this ID.

Image

#7 – Juvenile capped wheatear [5] . Finding decent examples is the challenge here with little help from fieldguides. The gape gives away the bird’s age. The rich orange-red edges of the dark wing coverts, combined with the white “V” in the tail tells the story.

Image

#8 – Spur-winged goose [14] . You surprised me with the answers to this bird. I thought the flight over the sea would throw more ‘mites off the right track!
