Thanks for a very interesting challenge, IMAX.

That rockjumper once again reiterates that we birders learn all the time... and that even the best references have portions that can be improved upon. My birding 'bible', Rob VII, MM version has a pic posted of a 'female' that is actually a juvie, given away by the gape that is clearly visible in that pic, as it is NOT in your challenge pic, meaning that bird is an adult.

One of my birding mottos for IDs is to go with bill shape first and initially ignore the sometimes confusing signals one gets from unusual bird plumage. I have made a note to extend that rule to the activity of aging a bird as well.

This is in other words a longer way of saying I agree with you on the female/juvie issue... The bird is indeed an adult female rockjumper.

Thank you for the results and explanations Imax! I would never have been able to ID the Immature Black Sparrowhawk correctly! :)

I'm glad there were more people who thought the Wryneck was an Owl!

Congratulations with your great score Ladybirder!

Sorry that I did not participate last week, but my head was rather occupied with a big cold and was not at all wanting to be used.

Now to my first time posting a Bird ID challenge, I hope it will be OK, if not I am sure that someone will tell me

My number of bird pics is rather limited so this is what you get:

I'm not so sure Micetta! Was looking for yet another Bird Guide this morning, but couldn't find one that we don't already have.

Can't wait to have a crack at these ones - determined to improve on 6.5/10. The BB looks formidable though. Hmm...

Here's a tip for no. 6: I've narrowed this down to a rufous-rumped white-browedscruffy-looking white-vented mocking (me) bird!

They are all South African birds fresh from the past summer, so no extinct bird among them

Thanks Pawps! I remember this one from the last time I visited Melbourne .... the only place on earth where you get them!

Thanks for your answer Micetta! I wasn't sure about two of them, and decided to ask you! Point is, I'm still not sure about those two, never mind the others that I cannot ID anyway!
