Answers to Challenge #47

14 participants and I don’t think we’ll be seeing anyone else enter.

Bird #1: African Reed Warbler (Supercilium buff, indistinct)

Image

Bird #2: Lesser Swamp Warbler (Supercilium cream, conspicuous)

Image

Bird #3: Little Rush Warbler (in breeding season richest brown of all warblers)

Image

Bird #4: Stierling’s Wren-Warbler (underparts barred on white, not buffy-brown as in barred wren-warbler. Broad-leaved habitat clue)

Image

Bird #5: Great Reed-Warbler (size and heaviness of the bill)

Image

Bird #6: Sedge Warbler (heavily streaked crown)

Image

Bird #7: Willow warbler (distinct creamy eyebrow extending well behind eye, pale yellow underwing)

Image

Bird #8: Red-faced cisticola (plain, unmarked bird with light rufous cheeks)

Image

Bird #9: Marsh warbler (This is the only bird that gave everyone difficulty. The arboreal habitat is very important and would eliminate many if not most of the confusing species; the dainty bill, eyering cream, no eyebrow)

Image

Bird #10: Dark-capped Yellow Warbler (Upper parts yellowish olive-brown; crown slightly browner than back. Underparts bright yellow)

My first Challenge for a while. I got 5/8 at first attempt (the one that counts!) Dabchick then gave me a clue as to locations and I then got the remaining 3 correct - just shows how important knowing the location is when identifying birds.

Will be thinking of you Jakkie Human! Hope the operation will be a huge success! Just remember, the after care is just as important as the operation itself! :gflower:

Congratulations with your 100% score Jakkie!

Well done Huntsman and Hippotragus! Glad that you have decided to participate again Hippotragus!

Thanks Hilda. It wasn't a case of "deciding" to participate - rather a case of finding the time to do it properly!! I don't like to do a half-hearted entry and, as you know, it takes time to look in all the books etc.

I hope I will have time to do the next few - but I never know what each day will throw at me and limit my time.

Good luck Jakkie - hope all goes well. Take time to recuperate.
