That's a pretty special sighting, JenB!

Only an estimated 90 breeding pairs of White-crowned Lapwing occur in Kruger and almost all of them are sighted from the Olifants river northwards (but for mysterious reasons not on the Letaba river). The only other known KNP-spot for this bird is in fact along the river between Lower Sabie and Nkuhlu picnic spot (where Sunset dam is also located). A great tick for Mpumalanga! :wink:

Thanx for the info, Joel.

I thought they were more common although we only saw them at Sunset dam.
Noted as a special sighting!

There were quite a few pairs of these birds on the H4-1 a few kms above Sunset Dam in May/June this year.
Also a new tick for me.

Cannot remember where or when I saw this one, there was a pair. I should like to know about those devilish horns on each side of the breast. Looking at Wendyp' s photo, seems the female also has them. So unlikely to be for breeding purposes.

Hi there ,

These also seem to be rare, only seen them a few times.
This was on the lower-sabie - nkuhlu road. 2010

Anybody had any sightings ?

This bird is actually a White-crowned Lapwing (Plover)

Quite often seen in the open sodic sites on S114/S25. But they are not easy to spot!
