I photographed the enclosed on the Mlondozi Dam road earlier this month.
Have consulted the books and believe it's unusual that the white feathers are so clearly visible and pronounced.
Thought I would share it with you for comment.

Quite so Dave.

I have never seen one like this!

Maybe send this to Trevor Hardacker at www.zestforbirds.co.za as he keeps a collection of unusual bird photos.

This URL is sort of interesting in getting so much data re
this bird in a short space.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... 5%26sa%3DN

Also, the URL itself seems to be the longest one I've ever seen.

Looking forward to some additional posts.

Would love to see one in flight! We saw a fair few for such a rare bird, mostly on the H7 half way to Orpen, I think there were 6 in all. We saw another 4 later.

Their numbers are definitely picking up! We saw 4 birds on the S25 23Oct and another 2 on the S30 the next day.

Hi All,

Some great pics on this thread.

Came across this family at Rooibosrant Dam. They had caught a Puff Adder which the younster swallowed in one!

WOW! Really great pic Barcud!

I am always fascinated when birds are killing one of Africas most poisonous snakes!

The Southern Ground Hornbill is also one of my favourite birds of Africa! They are so beautiful especially the eyes!

See you in Kruger May 2010!

Nice close-up!

Did you know that Ground Hornbills groom some animals as well?

"The warthogs approached the hornbills and then lay down on their sides to be cleaned," explains Mr Hendri Coetzee of North West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa.
Mr Coetzee says he repeatedly observed similar interactions between common warthogs (Phacochoerus africanus) and southern ground hornbills (Bucorvus leadbeateri) in the Mabula Game Reserve in South Africa's Limpopo Province.

The whole story

Found a group on S65 last winter. Was scared at first when group approached my parked car ( very small) fairly rapidly. And then they waited!
Went back the next day with the same response. Occurred to me that these guys have been "car=food" conditioned. What a shame. They were great to look at though!
