Yup, seen them flying a few times.
They have white flight feathers which you can't see when they are walking along the ground.

Nope. I end up with a few different southern this and that's but no hornbill. So I sent them an email.

Ok had anther look at the video and I think it is what you would call booming, not singing.

Hope I haven't caused too much confusion.

Anyway it's a lovely sound and we are very glad we got to see and hear them doing it together up in the tree. Haven't seen it again since, they have just been doing their usual pecking around on the ground.

I am sure it was lovely to hear the sound they made VicRob and no, you didn't cause confusion at all.
My big Roberts also says in close contact they make a soft wheezing noise as well as the normal booming.

I will move this topic over to Bird Forum and if you can manage to post the video it would be great.

I have seen Ground hornbills fly and they can fly extremely well, but like most large birds they prefer to walk along the ground as that is where their food is. They also roost in trees so must fly to get there as they are not able to climb.

I have also heard them 'booming' on several occasions, usually when they are together in a tree and it can travel quite a distance. It is one of the 'sounds' of the Kruger along with the Fish Eagle and all the other noises which remind us where we are.

Saw a pair at the Selati road in December 2013.

Light was not good but manage to capture a few images...

Are they still busy with the project?

JVW,

In December I saw a group of 3 Ground Hornbills on the other side of the Sabie on the H4-1 (about 15km from LS)
Would this be the same group? I remember reading that they have huge home ranges.
