Your Tawny-flanked Prinia ID looks correct to me

I wonder if you guys can help when I've got no picture.

There's a couple of prinias that's loudly been chrrpt chrrpt chrrpt-ing away outside my office window about 8 m away. I've got no binocs with me at work so I can't get a closer look, but from checking what kinds of prinias occur in the Pretoria area and the colouring I've narrowed it down to two options:

1. tawnyflanked prinia
2. blackchested prinia buff form, non-breeding.

I'm about 90% sure it's the tawnyflank, but it's supposed to favour "understorey of broadleafed woodland, and thick rank vegetation adjoining water", while the blackchested prinia likes "arid scrub, thornveld, exotic plantations and suburban gardens".

The sighting is on top of an arid, rocky koppie. The prinia is jumping around in a patch of Senecios (herbs between knee and hip high), and closeby trees includes Karee and Transvaal milkplum ("stamvrug") - typical Pretoria-koppie vegetation.

Will the blackchested prinias be in non-breeding colours at this time of year, or can I assume that it's a tawnyflank?

Hi Dabchick,

Your description of the call fits Tawny-Flanked perfectly. You will have to start taking your bins to work with you :lol: Don't let the boss catch you though :D

Thanx Barcud! :thumbs_up:

Well, the bird guide is lying around openly on my desk :whistle: , so I don't think the boss is going to be too surprised if the bins joins it! :lol:

@mgoddard

I think you will find that especially on this thread the really wise oaks (not referring to myself!) will not help unless you state the time of year / place and behaviour if possible of the bird. And with LBJ's, believe me, you really need the wise owls. If you go through the threads you will see that there have been many appeals for that and some very heated reactions as well. It's a matter of principle for them.

Good luck with the sorting, and I really envy your camera skills!

Walt3, Thank you. I must once again apologize for not mentioning where the pics were taken, but I took it for granted that ppl would know, forgetting about the many new members on the forum :redface:

All pics I post was taken during my 264 days in Kruger. From May 2009 to January 2010. If you need to know exactly when a certain pic was taken then I can post that as well (camp, road, date, time etc)

I hope i can get all ID's done to see where my bird list is standing.

@mgoddard

See how your last post got the gurus to help? :wink: I learn a helluvalot from them.

Never thought the last two would be of the same species. Still have more than plenty to learn, esp the brown ones. :hmz: :?

This one here gives me a headache. It looks like a warbler to me but i can´t say which one. The greyish colour is confusing me. It was seen at Matambeni bird hide near Letaba camp in KNP.

Well I reckon that is as nice a picture of a Tawny-flanked Prinia as any.
Well done.
