The Red-capped Lark, Calandrella cinerea, is a species of short grassland including uncultivated agricultural areas throughout the whole of South Africa. The red feathers on its head are often raised in a crest when the bird is agitated.

It is omnivorous, but seeds dominate its diet that also includes insects, foraged on bare ground. It moves with short runs as it searches for food.

It is found in flocks which sometimes number hundreds of birds when not breeding.

The nest is an open cup set into the ground, usually situated close to a grass tuft, stone or mound, built mainly by the male. The nest is lined with fine grass and rootlets. The Red-capped Lark breeds all year round, but mainly during the period following winter and well into summer. Two or three eggs are hatched in two weeks by the female with the male supplying food to the female at the nest. Both parents take care of the chicks until they fledge.

If you have pix, have a look at the area right infront of the wing... RCLs are the only ones with a red cap AND a red patch infront of the wing

Am I right in thinking that this might be a redcapped lark? Seen at MZNP on 16 September 2011.
