Also notice the white feet and remember that Martial Eagle also has a crest, perhaps just not as pronounced as that of Crowned Eagle. In my previous post I said that juv Crowned Eagle would have showed a white eye but I was mistaken in that juv Martial Eagle also has a white eye.

So all of the features on your bird points very strongly towards juv Martial Eagle.

Dotdan,

Thanks. That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure becasue it didn't have any spots on its front.

The second one may well be a Martial Eagle but I think you should also consider juv African Fish-Eagle (short tail, monster bill). You don't have a higher resolution image perhaps?

Thanks every one
@Deefstes I do have better quality images, I'm just not sure how to upload them, but with Binoculars the feathers went all the way down to the "toes" so I would go with the Martial
Thanks

Please help? Seen on the S28 just north of Croc bridge (3 days ago).
The darker spots on the side of the head and neck as well as the underwing pattern had me thinking it's juv. Martial eagle but the undertail pattern and spotting on the legs(?) made me take a second look at juv. African Crowned eagle or am I completely off base?

Hi Jen,

Your ID is spot on! Definitely Martial Eagle (juv). The undertail pattern and slight spotting on legs is also typical. Not a ACE, as it would have shown barring on the back of its neck.

Hi JenB ,

I agree , this is a young martial eagle for sure! You mention some of the characters yourself , and the tail (seen well on the 3rd pic.) is also good for martial - a crowned would have fewer and broader bands. Don't know about crowned having the back of the neck barred though , Moegaai...?
