The picture of the possible martial eagle was taken with a long lens at a fairly great distance (the picture you see is a crop). I wouldn't trust myself to judge size based on that.

I'm afraid I don't have any pictures showing the birds in a different position, just these from behind, so the feet or breast of the bird remained hidden.

Thanks for everybody's comments so far. It's nice to learn more about this!

Hi Kitefarrago

I agree with Imberbe that the barring of the tail may not be the best feature to identify the brown eagle on your pictures. However, the huge bill & skull, the crest and the uniformly brown coloration of the feathers on the head discriminates the martial eagle from other large yellow-eyed eagles.

Snake-eagles are also large-headed but they normally do not show a crest as the martial eagle on your picture does.

Cheers,
Manovo-Gounda

Looks like a juvenile Martial Eagle, but I'm not an expert MM. :hmz:

Seen on the S63 tar road to Pafuri borderpost in January 2011. Seems to be feeding on a Rock Monitor.

Hi

This one was on the ground close to Satara. I originally thought it was an African Hawk eagle, but could not see any markings, so then guessed this to be a imm martial. But did not look like the other imm martials that I had seen, hence this query.

Cheers

Sandeep

I agree with you that the shape of this one doesn't look right fo juvenile Martial, but with that colouring, the grey cere and the dark eye, it can't be anything else.
