I had posted this as being a Cape Sparrow, but being a fledgling birder was wrong. Thanks to the birder pointing this out to me!
This photo was taken in Twee Rivieren, KTP.

Hi Anne-marie,

I'll try with these for you, but No.3 will need confirmation from someone more experienced.

1. White-browed Sparrow-weaver.

Nice pics.

Hi all :)

Please help with this nest seen in MZNP. I was under the impression that it was a white-browed sparrow-weaver's nest, but Arks seems to think its that of a scaly-feathered finch?

Hi Bushfairy,

Initial appearance looks like that of the Sparrow weaver, the grass type looks like that of thatching grass, something a little too robust for the finch....BUT, the tree in which it is situated is much like the finch, which often nests in the crown of a small acacia, this looks like its taken from below though?!

The weaver also nests in colonies, normally on the outer edges of a tree taller than 2 metres.....So if this was the only nest in the immediate area, a strong billed scaly feathered finch it could be :D otherwise the weaver is the best bet, especially if the second 'secret' enterance was visible on the other side of the nest....

Here is the finch nest, with thin weaker looking grass.....

Hope this helps.........?!

Thanks so much :)

Was a tall tree (>4m) and there were quite a few in the same tree and then also in the surrounding trees! - so I can presume it's the white-browed sparrow-weaver then....?

Thanks sooOOooo much for your help!

Pleasure nickyG, im quite sure they would be the same nests, I have not been to MZNP myself, but have heard these weavers are breeding there very well!
