Shingwedzi river, KNP (Oct'06)

The African Pied Wagtail (Motacilla aguimp) is very similar to the more common and widespread, Cape Wagtail, in body shape and general behaviour but has a boldly pied (black-and-white) plumage. The underparts, throat and eyebrow are white and has a black band on the breast.
It is particularly common in association with large dams, rivers and other open-water impoundments.
Eats a wide variety of small invertebrates, mainly adult and larval flies, but also beetles, grasshoppers, drangonflies, butterflies and caterpillars, ants, termites, small crabs, worms and tadpoles. Occasionally tackles small fish.

It would help to know where and when you saw it. It looks like a capped wheatear to me.

I've looked at a few web pics of these two options you guys gave me and right now I'd have to say to my (untrained) eyes it looks more like an african pied wagtail than a capped wheatear...maybe somebody else will share his or her opinion, too but anyway: thanks for your suggestions!

Almost exactly 4 years between posts for a fairly common bird! And only two posts in total!

Hope this would bring some attention to some of these topics. Would love to see more pictures of these birds.

Lets see if the next picture can be posted before March 2015... :hmz:

 Lets hope 2011 sees a lot more posts here.
To be honest, I have seen enough wagtails, but can't remember making a good photo of them. They are not really good models, way too busy to sit still for a photo.
