Pipit (2x). Possibly Long-billed Pipit. The facial markings seem less pronounced than in African Pipit and I can't see white outertail feathers. You'll need to get more opinions on this one though.

Larks continue to perplex me, here are two that I'm not sure about. The first I'm thinking might be a fawncoloured lark?

(Or perhaps I'm WAY off the mark and they're pipits ... :wall: )

Both seen at Karoo NP on 13 September 2011.

Arks, just as an aside, your first bird is actually a Long-billed Pipit rather than an African Pipit...

Trevor, thank you SO much for the ID on the longbilled pipit. A lifer for me!

I still find larks and pipits very difficult to ID, but now that you've suggested longbilled pipit and I look at my field guide, it seems fairly obvious  :D

Seems that there are very few pipits in the index, so I'm happy to contribute a few pix from my September 2011 visits to MZNP and Addo. Both birds were very obliging 8)

Hi Bpgraham........

:hmz: Looks like a Spikeheeled Lark (Chersomanes abofasciata) to me, but could be wrong. :)

The top part of this forum is reserved for threads that deal specifically with ID issues. You should decide which category your bird belongs in and place the query there (is it an LBJ, raptor or fall under 'general').

Well, that advice you should follow when you next have a query. For now, my take on your bird: I think it is a long-billed pipit. The pink lower bill, weak eyebrow, hint of buffy retrices and finely patterned mantle are the reasons why I make that call.

I Hate LBJ's Please help this pic was taken at RietVlei the day of the Meet & Great.

I'm leaning towards Sabota Lark but just not sure.

Being unsure is a good sign, NetEk. This is a pipit. I'd like to have a better view of the bill specifically, but judging from what I can see, I'd say chances are good for a long-billed pipit: lightly streaked back, buffy outer feathers, prominent buffy eyebrow. However, having stated me gut-feel, the giss is buffy-like. Maybe you have a (few) different angle(s) to show?
