Need help with these LBJ's taken 10/2/10 in North West grassland late afternoon. Eating grass seeds.

Thinking black throated canary. Could not see any yellow.

Hi Tilandi,

I'll have a go at ID'ing these for you, but I'm not very confident with my answers!

No1. Looks like a Quelea od widowbird of somekind. I think the red bill is wrong for Black-throated Canary.

No2. Red-billed Quelea is the closest I can find at the moment.

No3. Yellow-throated Petronia perhaps?

No4. This is a tupical flycatcher posture. I'm taking a stab at Spotted Flycatcher for this one as I think I can see (or is that imagine!!) streaking on the throat.

Sorry I cannot be any more accurate than this.

Barcud

Hi Wingman,

Looks like a Juvenile Stonechat. I'm unfamiliar with your other Juvenile chat's in that area, but it's somewhere for you to start looking from.

Can you help me with the ID on these birds? All 4 birds were in South Africa at the MAdikwe Game reserve.

Hi Jan

Here are my guesses:

1. Familiar Chat
2. Long Billed Crombec
3. Jameson/African Firefinch (sorry don't have my books with me so can't really go into detail)
4.Going out on a limb here but I think it might be a Pale Flycatcher..

I'd go for...

1. Familiar Chat
2. Tawny-flanked Prinia
3. African Firefinch
4. Familiar Chat

With the first I don't have a clue maybe Tinkling Cisticola.
The second bird looks to me like Sabota Lark.

All except the last bird looks to me like they could be Marico Flycatchers.
The last bird I don't have an idea, sorry!

Hopefully some of the more advanced birders can check and maybe verify the answers please!

Hi all

Agree with the Marico Flycatcher. The last one could be a female African Stonechat, but being a relative beginner birder, this is a long shot!!
