I would certainly not go as specific... in fact, the only thing I can get from the pix is that it is a seedeater. Camera shake and OOF-problems have obliterated too much detail to but hazard a guess. With that short tail, I'll go more for a bishop or widowbird...

I am leaning towards Hilda's choice, although, what about a juvenile redback shrike, it also has a scaly type o pattern on the flanks, breast and neck.

Thanks Snoobab and JvR. The pix were taken thru the windscreen, hence the poor quality. This one will just have to remain a "mystery bird"

Not 100% sure on this one ... is it a female redbilled firefinch? Seen at Mapungubwe in late October 2014.

Not female... rather juvenile RBFF: see the small white gape tubercle and grey eye ring (adult fem eye ring = yellow)

Thanks JvR, yet again I am learning something new and useful

I saw quite a few different juveniles in late October/early November, many of them intriguingly baffling. Yesterday it took me quite some time to work out that what looked like "greenish louries", also seen at Mapungubwe, were in fact juvenile redfaced mousebirds 8) :)

Is this one also a juvenile RBFF? Or perhaps a female this time? While the eye ring appears to be grey, I don't see the white gape tubercle ... but that may be due to the angle of the photo?

That eye ring is more yellow than grey, arks. Compare it with the previous shot and the difference is quite marked.

Thanks Johan! I wasn't sure about the eye-ring colour as it's such a very pale yellow. Your help in pointing out the subtle differences is always much appreciated. :gflower:
