Arks, I am thinking Karoo Scrub-Robin. Would've loved to see a side on view though.

@ Arks

I'm with WTM on this one. The long decurved bill had me a bit confused, but after screening a bunch of pictures on the web, there appears to be quite a bit of variation on the bill length in this species. Yours probably represents the upper limit for this range.

Thanks WTM and adrianp  Definitely never thought of a robin! I unfortunately don't have a side view of this bird, I agree that that would have helped.

@adrian: thanks for the interesting info about the bird's bill, because that was one of the puzzling features of this particular bird. I'm always learning something new here!

:hmz: Might be wrong, but think it could be a "Karoo Scrub-robin (Erythropygia coryphaeus)".
You do get them in the Park. :)

Since this is one of the IDs in the current Bird ID Challenge (#37/2013), I agree with Philip1! Karoo Scrub-Robin.

After more head scratching last night I ask for confirmation of two and plain help with another! All photos taken at about 10:00 at the hide at Westcoast National Park on 25 November.

Is this a juvenile Karoo Scrub Robin? It has the characteristic white eyebrow but the clincher was a fluke pic I got (not included) as it flew under the boardwalk and I caught the characteristic white tail tip feathers.

After this I have three or so to go to ID but as usual I want to have a go at ID myself then put my neck on the block. Much more fun that way. I've had my head chopped off a few times and keep coming back for me as the folk here chop it off so kindly!

Thanks all

Pete

Hi Pete, I agree with all your id's. I am just not 100% sure of #2, but that is the best possibility.

Hello Guys

Got a list of unknowns

I am trying to verify.

Two different locations and most pics worthy of the cutting floor

Identification Help - General Birds

Unread postby Bush Baptist » Tue Jun 10, 2014 6:57 pm

Having spent the weekend in Tanqua, we saw some birds that we think we have correct and others that baffle.

3. Karoo scrub robin? But he was in a tree and the tail looks wrong.

Thanks in anticipation.
