GP, If I had to make a call, I would say this is an immature Jackal Buzzard moulting into its adult plumage. This is also probably the reason why it already has a tail band but still has a pale belly. You can see the black head and chest is coming along as well as the dark wings..

If I had to make a call (having no idea of size and Giss in flight), I would consider juvenile fish eagle?

You think Adrian? :hmz:

Could be, Immature Fish-Eagles do have a tail band..

This is an unedited photo of the same bird.
It was made at full 400mm zoom and still shows a pretty large bird. I had a look at the Fish-eagle too and notice 2 things - our bird had a very bulky bill for a buzzard and have a look at the white windows on the wings in this photo. I guess it could be?

But anyway, no new tick so not the end of the world if it's unsure which one it was.

Thanks for trying anyway!

GP, that photo shows the Giss of a Immature Fish-Eagle perfectly.. The molted underparts, broad wings, bulky head.

sorry for the poor quality, but it was quite far.

This morning on a bird count, about 30 km south of Malmesbury on the N7, about 30 km from Cape Town, I saw this raptor. I looked through my binos, which apparently lied to me. My first glance before taking these pics, told me it was an African Harrier Hawk, which from the pics it is not.

It was very dark grey, darker than a DCG, with yellow gizz and legs. These are the best of 4 pics.

We saw a lot of Jackal & Steppe buzzards in the general area, but surely this is not one?

Thanks.

Why would you rule out Jackal Buzzard, BB?
