The second one is a juvenile pale chanting goshawk MM.

Hello all
So I was driving up the S40 towards Timbavati picnic spot last week and I was regretting it because the road was badly corrugated and nexct thing, right next to the road this bird sitting on a stick. I cant find it in my Sasol app. and I dont know how to do any more research so I wonder if anyone can give me the name of the bird please. Sorry about the quality of the pics.

I'm wondering if it isnt a juvenile whatever it is because it didnt fly away at all. Could it be some kind of snake eagle because of the woolly legs?

Cheers - Ed

Snake eagles have 'bare' legs moobox. Looks very much like a tawny to me. The others that foncuse should not be 'here' yet.

@moobox You have a good pic of an adult Tawny Eagle. This is the only large all brown eagle present at this time of year. Look at the legs and you'll see they are fully feathered, this is pertaining to all the true eagles. The Brown Snake-eagle and juvenile Bateleur will both have naked legs covered in scales.
Both Black Kite and Yellow-billed Kites are not present in SA at this time of year.

Surprisingly I saw one over my house in Pinelands last weekend and a pair in WCNP on Wednesday. Maybe they have got tired of the Northern summer already.

Most unusual.

Unfortunately not Ross. On Wed I was driving and by the time I had stopped they were far off, but they came teasingly close for me to ID them. The one last weekend my wife IDed and commented that 'it should not be here'. It is not the first time I have seen the occasional YBK that overwinters.

I wonder if they are sub-adults not ready to breed, or old timers past it and too lazy to fly 'home'.

Any comments/discussion?
