My thought was also a Tawny, the white appears to be almost an additional piece standing away from the body, maybe a feather out of place

This looks to be a Tawny Eagle. Steppe Eagle would be a uniform dark brown all across the body. Look carefully at the pic and you see that the wings are a mottled brown along with a color contrast on the head and throat of this bird which points to Tawny

Hi everyone.

I wonder if anyone can help me identify this raptor, seen on the side of the road between Mapungubwe Nature Reserve and Alldays, last weekend:

Based on its stance, leg colour, cere and eye, I thought it may be an immature Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk, but I am really not sure.

Looking forward to any feedback.

Kind regards,
Ryan

Hi Ryan Im viewing this on my phone but you are probably right. I have travelled that road a few times and have almost always found pale not dark chanting goshawks in that area

It is definitely a juvenile chanting goshawk. The territories appear to overlap here (totally out of my area), but I go with wingman. Southern pale.

Wingman and BB should know .... I am always confused between Pale and Dark! Only know that you get the Dark in Kruger and the Pale in Kgalagadi!
