Need help here as well

Saw this raptor on the S90 in Kruger on 21.02.13 - Same was hunting for insects, grasshoppers and crickets on the road right in front of us and as soon as we came too close same flew away only to land again a bit further away on the road again

It blows my mind! We were there on the S90 a week later to seek these harriers and saw nada! :wall: :wall:

Either a Pallid or Montagu's Harrier. Will wait for some expert description on it.

I thought you were in Croc Bridge? We did the S90 end of January.

Pumbaa, I am by no means an expert, but I think this is a Monties.

The Dark facial patch doesn't extend to the base of the bill and there is also now white line under the facial patch which would be a good feature for Pallids. From what I can see there is also a lot of streaking on the head and neck

The red arrow indicates where the facial patch ends on this Harrier, the green arrow indicates where the facial patch should have extended to, if this was a Pallids.

This is how I would have came about an ID on this bird, I could be wrong though

Thanks so far

I was so hoping that this is a Montagu's harrier   but the drawings in my bird books were always a bit strange of that raptor.

Ringtail Harriers are always extremely tough, especially when you don't get a good look at the underwing. But I do tend to agree with Daan's explanation here... This looks like a female Monties to me.

Again, Ludwig, can you please tell us where and when you saw these birds?

I found another two where I need the help from the experts

This falcon was attacking nearly half an hour a water pipe in Skukuza restcamp at the waterfront bungalows on 15.02.2013 - It was amazing to watch until it realized that this prey is indeed uneatable.

Image

This I guess is an African Hawk Eagle - Seen in the Letaba riverbed on the S93 on on 22.02.13

Image

Sorry both pictures are extreme enlarged

Thanks for your help here :gflower:

The first bird is a young African Goshawk and I agree with your second id.

It is a super bird for Kruger, although it is quite common in Skukuza. We also saw one last month in the Safari tent section of Skukuza. Perhaps even the same bird. :D

Apart from the Skukuza area where I have had several sightings now, I saw another young bird near Croc Bridge and an adult at Shingwedzi.

It is an awesome bird!
