We saw this raptor along the Sabie River last month and initial ID was a Tawny but the gape seems to go back a bit further than that of a tawny so thought maybe a Steppe?

Please can I have some help with the ID of this raptor seen in Kruger in Feb this year.
Maybe a pale Wahlberg's?
The bird was quite some distance away so this was the best we could get at full zoom.

Not easy to judge from the photos, but the smallish nostril does make me believe that it could be a pale Wahlberg's.

Why can it not be a juvenile Tawny, pale form?

The pale form Wahlbergs I have seen all have dark uppers...

I think you may very well be right about this raptor, JVR :hmz:

I had a proper look at now and it does seem to have a robust bill which would be good for Tawny. I think the photos gives the impression that the raptor is smaller than what it really is by the way it is perched.

I also had a look at some of my photos of pale form Tawny and Wahlberg's and here is a pale form Tawny I found last year in the KNP.

I'll make a guess:

3. tawny eagle (pale morph)

(also you really should be specific about which park when you ask for ID, as for many formumites, 'the park' is KTP  )

OK didn't know about KTP being the park. :-) These were taken in KNP around croc bridge area on the way to Hippo pools.

I agree with arks about 'the ' park, but with the others about the IDs.

Lovely blonde tawny!

Having said that, where in Kruger did you see them whipper?

These shots were taken near the croc bridge area.

Thanx Johan and Bush Baptist for the Id of the birds

Here is another one for you.
I am thinking Juvenile Steppe Buzzard but not sure.
Saw him on the S3 in KNP on the ground busy with a snake.
