Dear Birders,
Please take note that this topic is regularly “cleaned” by moving the posts of a specific bird that has been positively ID-ed to the specific bird topic for all to use when trying to ID their bird sightings, and also to read all the interesting discussions about the birds while ID-ing them.
Should it be impossible for anybody to give a positive ID for a bird for some reason or another, it will be taken out, because it serves no purpose.
Go to Index to Birds Index to Birds and find the topic of the bird you are looking for.

Those small brown birds so many of us battle to identify, affectionately named Little Brown Jobs or LBJs for short by birders, can really be a pain especially if you want to increase the bird sightings list of your last trip.

Use this area to post photos of those LBJs you find difficult to identify and maybe some of the forum members might be able to be of assistance.

Remember only LBJs here. If you need a raptor identified go here and for all other birds you can go here.

Hi all

What do you think of this one - Levaillant's or Wailing? Seen on the top of Suikerbosrand in that area where both occur just to confuse us :D :D

Another bird that has me stymied :wall: I'd at first thought perhaps a female Cape sparrow, but it has a light coloured bill ... so perhaps a juvenile of some sort? Seen in my garden in Darling in late September 2013.

I am currently busy trying to sort out our birds seen in the Southern parts of Kruger during October 2013. I'll need a lot of help, and will post them here from time to time. Here are a few pictures of the first one (pictures taken from a distance unfortunately), and the closest I can come to an ID, is a Levaillant's Cisticola. Is that even close?

Thank you in advance!

Hilda based on the area and the habitat my best guess would be Rattling Cisticola - but that is really a guess :D

Thank you Trevorc! I was concerned about the greyish colour on this bird's nape, and I am sure you are right with Rattling Cisticola! Thank you so much for putting me on the right track! :D

Sorry Arks, pass on that one.

I would also go with a Levaillant's, the barring on the tail being the tell tale marking.
They look similar to grassbirds, bar the tails.

Thank you Gilbert14, I wonder if someone else can help us out here please? Levaillant's or Rattling? :hmz:

Levaillant's c. in KNP would be a very special sighting. For some reason they are quite scarce here. Habitat and colours of upperparts (lacking lots of black) is congruent with Rattling c.
