Nice pics, guys!Funny thing is, once you hear their distinctive call, even the most amateurish attempts by a human to "whistle" a reply can make them come closer!?

I have seen them fly up close after being called up by a wilderness trails ranger - seem to be territorial .

My favorite bird.

They are currently remarkably easy to find in the area just north of Pretoria.

I have recorded them on a regular basis at the following locations during winter at daytime:

Tswaing Crater
Zaagkuil road
Borakalalo NR
Hennopsriver picnic spot

Took the following pictures of the Perl-spotter Owl on the H2-2 about 2 km from the Afsaal picnic spot.

This is my best photograph of a pearly to date. I managed to call a pair closer to the Doispane Road near Skukuza earlier this month with the aid of a Roberts sound byte. Unfortunately the two wouldn’t perch together…

The pearl-spotted Owlet (Glaucidium perlatum) is one of South Africa’s commonest owls, distinguished by two black patches with white rims on the back of the head, which look like a large pair of eyes. This distinctive feature may help this diminutive “earless” owl to evade predators by making it appear larger than it actually is. As our most diurnal owl, the pearl-spotted owlet can be observed hunting a variety of prey types, with lizards, rodents, insects, birds and bats all targeted. Despite its relatively small size, powerful talons allow the pearl-spotted owlet to hunt prey much larger than itself.

Large view

It breeds August-November, laying 2-4 eggs in a tree cavity, often those made by woodpeckers or barbets. Incubation lasts 29 days.
