Im confused by this bird. I thought it was a Green backed Heron, but now see the legs are reddish and it also has a red eyestripe? :( Seen at Lake Panic in January

Just to add: the red (think Robert's calls it deep orange) colouring you see is usually only visible for a very short time during the breeding season, after which it changes back to the yellow we would normally associate with this bird.

Hi,

Hoping someone can id this bird for me (only just started getting interested in birds and I'm stumped by this one).

It was at the Kruger, near Lower Sabie, at Ntandanyathi Hide, early in the morning, on its own, in November this year. I thought at first it was a Kingfisher of some sort, then decided it looked more like a heron, but the red eyes are confusing me. It's not particularly big - about pigeon-sized I would estimate.

Thanks!

I suspect that is a Green-backed Heron in its breeding colors.

Maybe someone can confirm?

I say this is a Dwarf Bittern, but others say it is a juvenile Green backed Heron.

I took this shot at the Nhlambanyathi hide under Lower Sabie.

What would the real birders say?

Hey Michel!!

Looks like a juvenile GBH to me :)

Btw just realised what Nhlambanyathi means :dance:

Nhlamba = herd
Nyathi = buffalo

I was always to lazy to read/pronounce that name but now its easy :wink:

Thanks guys, but if you look at the area around the eye It looks more like a Dwarf bittern too me as the Juvenile GHB does not have the green around the eyes and the Dwarf Bittern has the greenish legs whereas the Juvenile GBH has more dull orange coloured legs. :hmz: :hmz:
