Just to add: the red (think Robert's calls it deep orange) colouring you see is usually only visible for a very short time during the breeding season, after which it changes back to the yellow we would normally associate with this bird.

Hi, could any of you stiffnecks please help with the identification of this lovely bird? The phota was taken in Kruger - obviously in a river.

Thank you!

Hi DB :D I think so, but an immature one. The adult doesn't have those stripes on its neck/chest.

Hi Guys

The small heron is puzzling me. It doesn't have the white spots on the wings that a Juvie Green-Backed Heron would show. I have deliberately left the Yellow-Billed Stork in the photos to give you an idea of size. Spotted at Borakalolo NR yesterday. Could it be a juvie Rufous-Bellied Heron or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

If I had taken the pics a bit closer then it wouldn't be such a puzzle!

Thanks

Unfortunately not the bird you're looking for :(

Its a sub adult(possibly adult) Greenbacked Heron, showing the immature striped neck, but adult plumage on the wings, thus lacking the white spots. :D
