Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber)

Image Image

Other names:
Afrikaans: Grootflamink
German: Flamingo
French: Flamant rose
Portuguese: Flamingo-comum
Dutch: Flamingo

The feeding flamingos were photographed at the Geelbek hide in West Coast National Park.

Well one should not be able to confuse a flamingo for any other bird and the most noticeable difference between the Greater and Lesser flamingos when they are not feeding together is the bill colour. Greater flamingo has a pinkish bill with a black tip whereas the bill of the Lesser Flamingo is an all dark red

Is it possible that this is a juvenile lesser flamingo (with what looks like a completely dark bill) surrounded by greater flamingos? Or is it an illusion?

Thanks Dabchick and DotDan — but since Dabchick says lesser and DotDan says greater ... anyone care to break this tie? :hmz:

@Lizet: Do you have an opinion on my flamingo query? Dabchick says lesser, while DotDan says greater ... so I'm still wondering ...

arks,

I would go for Juv Greater Flamingo, because of the brown on the neck and grey legs.

This photo was taken in midday? Therefore the harsh sunlight - the bill looks probably this dark because of the shadow of the body over the bill.

I pushed the exposure up so that we can see the bill colour better and there is for sure contrast between the tip and the rest of the bill. Lesser would have an almost black bill with very little contrast.

Many thanks for your detailed reply, Lizet. It's another of those pix that just piqued my curiosity when I looked at it closely — even tho I knew it was unlikely :)

I have learned SO much from this forum thru asking and from the many thoughtful answers I've received, and it has definitely increased my interest in birds. Actually, I'm only an 'active' birder when I'm visiting South Africa. The first book I bought on my very first RSA trip in 1984 was the then-just-published Ian Sinclair's Field Guide to the Birds of Southern Africa and it was my birding 'bible' for 20+ years. I now travel with Newman's Birds of Southern Africa and am being tempted to add the Roberts field guide. (Personally, I don't care for the Sasol field guide at all, even tho most swear by it.)

arks, my pleasure!

Funny that you mention Ian's book. That exact fieldguide was also my first birdbook and I got mine in 1986 - I was 12 back then! I used it for many years before I got my first Roberts...
