At first I though that this was a little stint. However, when I noticed the dark central shafts in the feathers, I wondered if it could conceivably be a rednecked stint? Seen at Strandfontein (Cape Town) on 8 December 2012.

this is a crop to show the dark central shafts of the feathers

The dark central part to a little stint’s feathers is a normal feature. A red-necked stint would stand out amongst little stints as slightly larger, with longer wings and tail giving it an elongated appearance. Its legs are shorter; the bill is shorter and bulkier with a heavier base and more substantial knob at the tip. Never seen one, though. This info I got from googling and Roberts VII... At least I'll know one when I see it (I hope...)

A little stint from my home patch shows off those dark feather shafts.

A few more that I'm not quite sure about :hmz: all seen along Darling Hills Road in late December 2012.

1. Is this perhaps a female pintailed whydah?
Image

2. I first thought that this was an African pipit, but now I'm wondering whether it may rather be a longbilled pipit?
Image

3. I think this is an immature chat of some sort, possibly a socklewinged chat?

Pumbaa's bird is a spotted flycatcher. With arks's bird I have to hit the books... no time for that now, sorry.

Yarwell... these things take time...

The first bird is a juv pin-tail

The third bird is a juv capped wheatear (yellow base to bill, orange/red edges to wing feathers)

The second bird is ALSO a juvenile bird which makes the ID doubly difficult: usually the pink tinge to the bill would clinch the ID as long-billed, but in juv African, the bill also shows some pink. Cryptically the hind claw is hidden... that would give away the ID in a flash! I need more time... Or another picture!

Thanks so much, Johan! I'd never have guessed the wheatear as the juvie drawing in my Newman's doesn't look at all like my bird :? I'll see if I've another pic of the pipit that shows the hind claw ....
