RichardS, I'm guessing "hides" because that was the subject of Jefrrey52's post. Hope I got it right, J52!

Ahhhh...... note to self.... read subjects carefully!!!!

I didn't see any and no mention was made of any hides in Marakele. I'm back there in a couple of weeks and will make a point of looking for some.

Can anyone else confirm if there are any hides in Marakele?

Cheers

When we were there last year, the Honorary Ranger on duty told us that a hide is being planned for one of the dams in the Bontle section of the Park. If I remember correctly it was the Langtoon Dam.
Would actually be very nice to have a birdhide in Marakele.
Any news on this?

We're camping at Marekele this long weekend  . Is there a communal kitchen with stoves or should I take along the gas bottle? Does each site have a braai?

Thanks :)

Hi Senyetse,

No communal kitchens, but every site at Bontle has it's own braai. Looking at the weather in JHB over the last week, I would take the gas bottles as a backup.

Have a good one!!!!!!

Cheers

Richard

Hi Senyetse!
There are washup facilities though but no stoves or permanent boiling water.
You are going to love Marakele - have a great time!
If there is any news on the proposed bird hide would you let us know please? The Honorary Game Rangers on duty are very helpfull and friendly.
Enjoy!

Hi all forum members. Is there anybody who can tell me what the camp sites are like at Marakele? We are going in November which will be quite hot and I'd like to know how much shade there is. We are taking a caravan. Are the caravan sites paved and level?

Hi Orangek,
Welcome to the forum! :D

Bontle is a lovely camp. The sites are not paved but they are spacious and reasonably level. There are lots of trees and most sites are well shaded.
Have a look at my trip report, you might get a pretty good idea.

Enjoy your trip, Marakele is a special place! :D

Hi
We're going to Marakele for the first time this weekend, will be camping at Bontle. Would it be advisable to phone and request a specific site? If so, which number? This will be my fist time camping in a national park!

Thanks for the trip report on Bontle. Looks like the Rhino's come into the camp - how wonderful to be able to have no fences. Can anybody tell me if there are family bathrooms?

Orangek, the bathrooms are all indicated as Ladies and Gents but if you don't mind waiting until everyone is asleep, I'm sure you can turn anyone into a family bathroom if you wish.

Don't think DO. You might get a pleasant surprise. This is almost a reverse park where you stay in Bontle and enjoy camp life and the game come watching you. Sharing impala, kudu & wildebeest not to mention the myriad of smaller creatures is an awesome experience. See if you can make it during the rutting season it just adds so much more to the trip
