Hi

We are planning visiting the park in April 2013 and we are not sure where to stay? :hmz:

There are 4 adults and a 2.5 year old so we though we would give the Brabant guest house a try as it looks like it has more space.

Does anyone have any advice/experience at the guest house i.e. location, hikes, rivers, safety etc?

Many thanks
Iain

Hi IainP,

We have photo's made inside/outside the Brabant House, but they are unedited. I will have to work on them first. It can only be reached by a vehicle with high clearance. You walk past it on one of the lesser known hiking routes. It's situated in the valley behind the horse stables. Beautifully restored Sandstone Farmhouse. You will have plenty of space, believe me. It is HUGE!

The photo's as promised. You'll notice it looks very old and almost neglected. Don't let THAT fool you. It is gloriously beautiful inside. Beautifully restored. You feel like you're stepping back in centuries to a time long gone.

There is a hiking trail at the back of the house. NOT an easy one because you climb into a ravine, but the reward is something special. :D When we did it you weren't allowed to do it on your own, You had to have a SANParks guide with you.

Image

This is what you're aiming for. There is sandstone cave up in the mountains with a pool. You're allowed to swim through, up the ladder and into another cave.

It's a pleasure! :D

Just remember that the pics don't do this house any justice at all. The smell when you enter an old sandstone/wooden floor house, the beautiful artwork against the walls, the copper instruments.... Beautiful. 8)

We've stayed at the Noordt Brabant Farmhouse for two nights and confirm GP's statements. It is very special for a SANParks accommodation and worth a stay.

I'm not sure if you really need a high clearance vehicle. We had one but I know people who did the road with a Polo. It's 2 kms unpaved dirt track which might get uncomfortable after heavy rain or snow.

Here you'll find some of my pics:

The kitchen is fully equipped. If you don't want to cook - we dined outside of the park at The Kiara Lodge at the R712, which is only a 5 minute drive from the farmhouse. The road is a public road so the park gates do not close.

@GP: great photos. We missed the crack. But at 5° C we avoid swimming anyway. Too :bcool: for us.

That is my next place to stay when we visit GGHNP again! It is nicely secluded and in a beautiful area.

An excellent option when you have kids as it is not as risky as the Highlands Retreat, which is the most spectacular place to stay, but is situated on a steep mountain side.

We always enjoy staying in Golden Gate. This Park is special in so many ways. The Oribi’s never fails to impress me, they look so noble against the soft flowing green fields in summer :) . We will definitely try to book this farm house for our next visit as it sounds
