Marakele: History

Unread postby george667 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:21 pm

I wonder who could be able to tell me more about the history of marakele national park. I am very interested in reading about the history of every park in south africa and marakele has given me the only confusion, as I have been told different stories by several of the staff members working there. I have searched it on the SANparks website, but little information is given.

I would appreciate any feedback or knowledge from any one...

Thank you kindly...

If memory serves, Marakele was once called Waterberg National Park. (not to be confused with the one in Namibia)

*edit*

I was wrong, it used to be the Kransberg National Park

According to Wikipedia (who aren't always right!!) it was originally home to various iron-age settlements.

It was in more recent years, prior to becoming a National Park, home to Eugene Marais, the naturalist.

It was founded as a National Park in 1994, but was then called The Kransberg National Park, changing it's name shortly afterwards to Marakele.
