This is my first time posting here so please excuse if I make a mistake or ask a silly question. My husband and I will be driving into Clarens on 9th Sept from Ermelo (coming from Kruger). We are both in our mid 60's and are not into hiking, fishing or bird watching but I've been told the scenery is spectacular in this park and that is what we enjoy looking at. Is it possible to just drive though the park the next day on the way to Ladysmith or further south or is it a place where more time is needed and if so doing what? Google Maps say it's only a 178km drive to Ladysmith from Clarens so I'm thinking perhaps that would give us enough time to meander thru the park? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

Golden Gate is indeed a park which has fantastic scenery. And a road right through it, so you can indeed just go through.
There are only 2 loops, which almost connect, and both are very well worth driving. They do not take a lot of time if you are not into birding. Though you will want to stop here and there for the views.

The easiest way to explain it: click the link under this text, and navigate to the photos we took in Golden Gate. Not all of the photos were taken there, but most will give you an idea what the park looks like.
Having a break at the Basotho village for some coffee and a snack is something I would recommend....

You sure won't regret visiting this amazing park!

If you want an idea of the scenery - check out my latest trip report which covers a trip we did in April 2011 to Golden Gate.

All the best with planning your trip and I hope you have good sightings and weather all around!

Many thanks Morkel. Your pictures are stunning! Wish we could spend more time rather than just driving thru. Can't wait to show my husband your pics tonight when he gets home. He will be as anxious as I to get there and see it for ourselves. You mentioned your next stop being MZNP. Don't think I've run across that before. Where is it? 8 weeks and counting to our arrival time in S.A.
