Visited the park last year but the Hide & Tree Top walk were still damaged from the floods and inaccessible. Have they since been repaired?

Thanks

Jen,

I have phoned Mapungubwe reception and according to them the treetop walk is open, however they are still busy fixing the hide which will only be finished during October 2014.

One presumes that with the length of time it has taken to repair it, the hide will feature exquisite hand carved Venda style arches with a golden rhino replica mounted on top....

Still a great place though ;)

Quite a magic place.

It must take special care and planning, as it is vulnerable to extreme weather. I wonder if they have had to factor in the possibility of more floods in the construction. I should imagine that the engineering behind this must be very important.

I sent a query about the Treetop and Maloutswa hides to the Mapungubwe Hospitality Manager and this is the reply that I received this morning:

"Treetop walk has been partially opened and we waiting for pending Insurance claims to repair it completely.

Maloutswa bird hide is not yet opened , reconstruction is in progress. The delay was due to the fact that it was submerged under water since our last floods and we had to wait until water is completely finished."

When I asked whether there was any chance that either hide would be reopened by the end of October 2014 (which is when I will visit the park), I was told that it was highly unlikely, "due to the fact that after we get approval for insurance claims it will have to go on tender which is a lengthy process as well."
