Thank you so much for posting! Would love to see some photo's!

We are going to the western section - camping in Mazhou. Did you visit the Maloutswa Hide?

Hi again Naomi,
We did visit the hide a few times with very nice sightings. We were told by the guy near the entrance that the elephants visit the hide every day at 12.00 and 16.00 - and so we sit in the hide waiting for ellies on the Friday morning and exactly on time they arrive at 12.00 the 1st day with a tiny baby in tow :D On Saturday we went back the afternoon with the tar road because the Den Staat road is in a horrible condition  I took my first photo of the Ellies at exactly 16.01 :D

I will try and post photos of both sides tomorrow after work.

Hi Naomi. It would be much appreciated if somebody can let us know about the rain.
We’ve been back a week after spending 7 nights. It was extremely dry especially the western side. I found it very distressing. Have never seen the animals so thin. I wanted to weep for the elephants.

I visited a farm close to Pontdrift (about 20km away) last week and they had 44mm and again 34mm two days later. I have been told that the scenery changed dramatically.

Thanks for posting some good news avon vosloo!

Hi giraffee! I felt exactly the same after visiting Marakele at the end of September! We could not believe how dry and barren it was! They have apparently received some good rains in the meantime. Just hope that it turns out the same for Mapungubwe!

So - anyone with firsthand information - please keep us updated. :D

Hi everyone. I am in the park from the 1st January. I would also love to know what the rainfall has been like. I was there in April and it was very dry. I am hoping it won't be as bad now?

Hi there, Dave!

It seems like information about Mapungubwe is not easy to come by! We will have to go see for ourselves - we are booked at Mazhou from the 2nd if January for 4 nights. :D

this is the best wed site I use all the time to see whats up with the weather at Mapungubwe.

We were there over Chrismas the river is full but it's still very dry. Every day the ellies came down for a swim in the middle of the day.

Does anybody know if Mapungubwe, especially the Western Section, received any rain over the past couple of days? We were at Mazhou from the 2nd to the 6th of January and were absolutely shocked to see how dry it is! I do not know on what the animals are surviving - no grass at all! In some places it looked like a desert and the elephants have caused havoc in their search for food. I will post some pics soon. :(

I am soo glad to hear that Mapungubwe has received lots of rain and that apparently more rain is expected!

Here are a few pics to show how dry is was at the beginning of the month

Both pics were taken on the access road to Mazhou after entering through the boom-gate.
