Since there are no fridges or freezers in the camp, how available is ice in the camp? Is there a shop on the hotel side?

There is a small shop at Glen Reenen right opposite the caravan and camping site. This pic shows the reception are and the sign for the shop. Lovely spot - I hope you enjoy. The shop did sell ice although it was iced lollies we were needing!!

The caravan park has lovely big trees with lots of shade and I am sorry that I didn't take photos of the site. We walked through the campsite. There is a little stream that flows round it which is very relaxing. I don't have to tell the seasoned campers that some of the sites can get quite muddy if there has been lots of rain!!

Thanks Jackie.
Will need ice to keep food cold since there are no fridges.

Has anyone stayed at the Highlands Mountain Retreat? Is it part of the Glen Reenen rest camp? Is it easily accessible and would you recommend staying there? When we last visited this Park a few years back it was before the improvements were done and we think this camp/site may be new. Thank you very much in advance

We visited Glen Reenen in Golden Gate during the weekend of 10 December 2010 and it was a delight. The camp is kept very clean and tidy and it is very peaceful. Although we are aware that Golden Gate is more for the scenery we saw Oribi, Zebra, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok and two Jackals on the drives close to Glen Reenen. Mellory unfortunately we could not find space in the Highlands Mountain Retreat but we saw the turn-of on the Oribi loop. The very friendly Receptionist at Glen Reenen told us that the Mountain Retreat is very popular and a person should book well in advance. Maybe next time as we really want to stay there. We stayed in a cottage and had a perfect view of the Buttress. At night it is lightened and it is so beautiful.
