Very bad news indeed. Hopefully they can rebuild before the December holiday season starts.

I really hope no one was injured and I'm very glad that they managed to contain the fire before all the units was destroyed.

Can we take it no one was staying in the units at the time? And that no one was hurt?

We visited yesterday and reconstruction of the camp was underway. The museum section remains unaffected and works as normal, and was worth the short detour.

Update:

We stayed in #5, so less than 10 meters away from #7, but we didn't get a single whiff of the tank. And we were downwind from it.

Hi Duques,
Just a quick and late reply.
I'm glad to hear that. They obviously fixed the problem (as should be). I intend to go back soon.
Was the area around the resort still very black from the veld fires when you were there? I presume the vegetation has started growing back.
I want to go back at a time when all is green around there (and also when it is white! I love snow and cold weather).

Regards
Cuca

Hi,

Can someone please tell me what kind of temperatures to expect day and night at Highlands Mountain Retreat in December? Does it rain a lot in Golden Gate at this time of year? :?

Hi Nightjar, I haven't stayed at the Mountain Retreat yet, so can't tell you the temp at night but I think it would be a lot cooler than the day. Day temp can be anything between high twenties to low thirties.
Golden Gate falls in the sumer rainfall, and its weather can be very unpredictable, especially sudden thundershowers in the afternoons. If you planning on doing the day hiking trails in the afternoons, my advice will be to keep an eye on the weather.

I have seen photos taken of snowfalls in December in an adjacent areas , be prepared for the unexpected .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.
