Hi, I am planning a five nighter in Addo Park and would love to attempt the "BEDROGFONTEIN" 4X4 TRAIL. :D I have been searching through the topics and different forums but need your help. i have a Nissan xtrail diesel , do you know the condition of the road recently? i am a bit hesitant to attempt it alone but i would hate to miss the opportunity as i believe it is a lovely trip.
Are there very bad areas where i might damage the vehicle or get stuck for a day or two

You will be able to do the 4x4 trail with any 4x4 vehicle or even a 4x2 vehicle as long as it has diff lock and provided the trail is not wet from rain.
The trail is grade 2-3 with an optional grade 5 river crossing. The river crossing should not be attempted on days when the Darlington Dam sluice gates have been opened but condtions can be checked with the ranger on duty.
Also note that the trail and the Kabouga section will be closed in the event of more than 5mm of rain as it becomes too slippery and dangerous.

We did it last year and it was a very nice experience. Planning on doing it again from Darlington to Kabouga this time. Just make sure you also have enough liquid refreshments(non-alcholic) as it can get very warm in that area. Your Nissan should do fine - just make sure you pick the correct line in the rocky sections. Enjoy it.

Thank you JP. I am a bit desperate for feed back, so am gratefull .
i have heard the bush is not cut back and could get the vehicle scratched ! are there many serious rocky areas that could be a problem and how long did it take you.
I am really keen to do the trip, but don,t want it to turn out a flop, or have a six hour "shake about" or have to turn back.

Thanks again

Hi

I didn't get any scratches that I can remember and we did it in about 3 hrs. Go - you'll enjoy it!!! I think it was about 3 rocky sections.

It is really a beautifull scenic drive over the mountains. I think you must give yourself more than 3 hours to do the trip. 5- 6 Hours if you want to enjoy the scenery and take some photo's.

NOT FOR THE FEINT HEARTED.
Please only do this trail in a 4x4 with low range.Take it from me ,you can get into serious trouble, have a badly scratched vehicle.
Take spare wheels or puncture kits.
Let someone know that you are on the trail as there is no gate on the Darlington side. Travel only with another vehicle, don't do what i did and travel alone.
This is good advice.
What beautiful scenery but don't see it alone

It all depends on the vehicle you use...for my 4x4 Suzie...and my wife...it was a walk in the park. But, I agree that this is a definite 4x4 route where a low range gearbox is needed to protect you vehicle.
