MZNP: Doornhoek Cottage

Unread postby bosneus » Tue Oct 15, 2013 12:23 pm

Hi all

Heard a rumour via a friend of my father's that the Doornhoek house at Mountain Zebra has been damaged in a (veld) fire - does anyone know whether there is any truth to this? And if so, what the extent of the damage is?

Stayed there in 2008... would be a right shame if it got damaged, it's a magical spot.

Doornhoek is a typical Karoo style house in the Mountain Zebra National Park and of historical interest. Those who have stayed in this Sanparks house will know that it is special. I do hope that Doornhoek has not been damaged/or severely so by fire.

I just called reservations on (012 428 9111) - apparently the rumour is true, and the Doornhoek house has been completely gutted by a fire approx two months ago. Not sure why it didn't show up on any newsletters or the Facebook page, maar nou ja.

Very sad news :(

Hope renovation of some kind is possible.

I can confirm that the Doornhoek Guest House, a restored national monument built in 1837, burnt down in the early hours of 15 September. The cause seems to have been an electrical short in the roof. Although there were guests booked in at the time, they all escaped without injury. The house was all but destroyed along with many antiques inside.

It is estimated that the four-star guesthouse will take at least 10 months to rebuild. The South African Heritage Resources Agency will be engaged in the process of rebuilding.

We recently visited MZP for the first time. The Doornhoek Guest House is looking very sad - just a shell with no roof etc. It must have been magnificent before the fire and I hope it can be fully restored. I understand some antique furniture was also lost in the fire and hope it can also be replaced, to give the right atmosphere.

Such a beautiful place, according to Bosneus' picture of the house! We have never been there, neither seen it, but the loss of a national monument like this is very sad! :( Glad that nobody got hurt though!

I sincerely hope it will be rebuild to look the same as it was before! :thumbs_up:

Does anyone know how the restoration work and renovations are progressing on the historic Doornhoek House after the fire?

Is there perhaps any feedback regarding the restoration work done to the Doornhoek Cottage? Thank you.

Dear Forumites;

We are rebuilding the house in the same style as it was built. We contracted an architect with heritage home experience to ensure that we produce the most accurate replica of the house. Most of the original walls of the house have remained intact.

The construction contractor has been on site since October 2014 and we hope that building work will be completed within the next 3 months, if all goes according to plan.

In the meantime, we have already opened bookings for the period commencing 1 October 2015 but will re-evaluate if we can open up earlier months for reservations once the building work has been completed and the house refurbished.
