Dear formites,

I'm thinking of visiting the frontier parks in December next year (i.e. 2014-2015).

I have the option of travelling to SA either from 13 Dec - 4 Jan or from 20 Dec - 11 Jan.
Would mid Dec be less busy compared to the beginning of January in Addo NP and MZNP? How are the traffic jams in those parks during school holidays as compared to kNP?

The itinerary I have in mind is as follows - does this sound ok? Back to front obviously is also an option :-)

Day 1 (Saturday)Arrival from Europe - flight to PE - Addo NP
Day 2 (Sunday) Addo NP
Day 3 (Monday) Addo NP
Day 4 (Tuesday) Addo NP
Day 5 (Wednesday) Addo NP
Day 6 (Thursday) Mount Zebra NP
Day 7 (Friday) Mount Zebra NP
Day 8 (Saturday)Mount Zebra NP
Day 9 (Sunday) Mount Zebra NP
Day10 (Monday) Camdeboo or Karoo
Day 11 (Tuesday) Camdeboo or Karoo
Day 12 (Wednesday) Garden Route NP
Day 13 (Thursday) Garden Route NP
Day 14 (Friday) Garden Route NP
Day 15 (Saturday) Bontebok
Day 16 (Sunday) Bontebok
Day 17 (Monday) Bontebok
Day 18 (Tuesday) Spare day somewhere
Day 19 (Wednesday) Spare day somewhere
Day 20 (Thursday) Spare day somewhere…
Day 21 (Friday) Capetown
Day 22 (Saturday)Capetown - flight back

Any feedback would be most appreciated! :)

Hi there Frizzle.

I would most definitely try to fit the Karoo National Park in. The park is fantastic at that time of the year, and it’s a splendid drive from the Karoo National Park to the Garden route parks, going through Karoo, mountains and Forests. We did 3 days in Karoo NP and then 3 in Garden Route last December and loved it.

Also, you will need to think about which camp you are going to stay at in the Garden Route National Park. There is Storms River, Natures Valley, Knysna and Ebb and Flow in Wilderness. They are all fantastic.

Hi Frizzle

SA's peak holiday season is from around 16 December to just after New Year, and I think anywhere close to the coast will be busy at this time; or any of the 'summer' holiday destinations in the country.

Your second choice of dates will give you more time during the less busy period.

I would trim off a day in Addo and MZNP and try get to Camdeboo and Karoo.

At that time of year the Garden Route is the place to be in SA, and I would try spend a bit longer in the area than you have planned. Maybe trim a day off Bontebok. And give CT a few more days too, there is SO much here to see too, including the SANParks in this area.

Thanks for your replies Leaping Lizards and Dinkybird,

I'll fit in Karoo NP somehow.
Which places along the garden route should I visit according to you - so much to see, so little time (always the same problem, right??)

Maybe it's best to start my trip in Capetown on 20 Dec and work my way to PE. The garden route might be busy then but Addo NP maybe less busy.

I spent a week in Cape town in 2002 but I'ld love to go back (still have to go to Robben island - didn't manage to go last time since the boats to the island were cancelled a couple of days in a row due to rough seas).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi,
I add my questions to this thread.
We are thinking to go to Addo and Karoo (and perhaps Camdeboo and/or M. Zebra) at the end of December 2013. We would have about 14 days, starting and ending the tour in Cape Town.
My first questions are:

- what about the car? do we need a 4x4 or 4x4 low range to see the best of these parks? (our latest experience with SanParks is Kgalagadi - Botswana side, there you definitely need 4x4 low range... )

- we will have our own tent, I know it is very late to book camps for that period, do you thing we have some chances? if we camp outside the parks is it possible to visit them in day trips?

I will come back with other questions, for the moment thanks for your replies!

Hi silvia.n

I have been to the Karoo NP 3 times and Addo NP 5 or 6 times. I have never used a 4 x 4, and have never felt like I am missing out.

The Karoo NP is a big park with very little roads. There are some 4 x 4 tracks that allow you to see more of the park. We are told by the rangers at Karoo that the soil in the East of the Park (where the 4 x 4 trails go) is sandy and therefore better habitat for foxes etc. Have a look at the Map of Karoo National Park and you can then decide on your car. My SO has done the 4 x 4 trails and says that they are pretty basic.

If you do not get camping spot in Addo, you are allowed to do day trips, and Addo also does Game Drives for people not staying in the park (They are very pricey though) If you do get into the camp site at Addo, you will not be disappointed, one of SANParks best camping sites.

Enjoy

PS. All my opinions on Addo are based on the main game area and camp. Addo has some 4 x 4 trails also, but I cannot comment on them.

Thank you Leaping Lizard!
I had a look to availability in Addo and Karoo and fortunately there are still campsites. :D

As for Karoo 4x4 loop, I see from the map it is a big part of the Park! Do anyone know the Embizweni cottage? is it worth a visit?

Hi!
we have booked our stay in Addo, but unfortunately the campsite was fully booked. :(
So we have the first night in Narina bush camp, and we have to find where to go the second night. (the day after we will be on the Garden Route, on the way to Cape Town).

Do anyone have some suggestion for a camping outside the Park? I see there are a lot of them but I don't know if someone is too far. :hmz:

Do you think we should wait and see if there is some last-minute cancellation in the Park campsite?

If you do want to make suggestions on where to stay outside of the park please pm Silvia with these.
