Recently received a URL for Youtube showing a buffalo kill by two male lions. The heading is Addo lions kill buffalo. On viewing the clip I notice that the horns of the buffalo are not of the usual kind with the large boss. These horns grow upwards and not down and round. What buffalo are these? here is the URL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvxkiVYR ... detailpage

I couldn't get the video to play, but if it is the same one that appeared about 6 months ago, then I would guess that the kill was done just above Carol's Rest waterhole in Addo, and that these were normal Cape Buffalo as found in Addo.
Hope that helps,

I watched the video the one they caught is a young Buffalo, But the ones running ahead are all cows and do not have the large bosses like the bulls do. Same as elephants the horns change from region to region. Might be that the genes of wide horns have been hunted out. As far as i know the the elephants in Addo dont really have tusks as well.

Yeah - was calves killed by the 2 male lions, who have since been relocated to Kuzuko.
Hence the horns pointing up. The rest, as stated, were female. And had much smaller "bosses"
All are the same species - Cape Buffalo .
Hope that helps ??
I had the experience of getting caught ina whole herd of cows and juveniles crossing the road up by Mbabala Loop....seemed like 15mins of running buffalo, dust, and grunting (was more like 2mins). Not much one can do ... just sit tight.....although, these weren't being chased by lions.
