The first phase of the plan is to move elephants, red hartbeest, eland and buffalo (not necessarily all at once and in that order) into the Colchester area by means of capture and introduction. This should happen in the autumn/winter months next year. There are already kudu, bushbuck, bushpig, caracal, warthog and smaller mammals in the area.

Any feedback on when the first animals will be moved to the South?

I think the tourism products in Colchester will be out of their skins when there are more animals in that section of the park.

No dates have been set yet, but it will probably be late 2009 (subject to change...).

Are any of the roads in the new section between Colchester and the South Gate that they were building in November open for traffic yet? (Sorry if this has already been asked)

No, the new Colchester roads have not been completed yet. The aim is for completion around June 2009.

Having just spent a weekend in Addo I can confirm that non of the new roads in the Colchester section of the park are open for tourists. Although it does look as if this will soon take place. Sadly June 2009 has come and gone. So me thinks closer to December.

There are also as far as we could see no elephants, buffalo etc in the new section. We did see Jackal, Kudu, pig. Me thinks when this new section opens its going to rock. Although spotting animals in the new section of the park is going to be tough, its very overgrown, the elies are going to have a party..

Btw an idea as to electric gates, they should have a double gate system. You stop at gate one, drive over the electric cattle grid, then drive say 20min and then stop at gate 2. Gate 1 closes and then triggers gate 2 to open.. me thinks the 1gate system like they have at the picnic spot isnt very safe.. If the gate is open and the power fails you gona have problems ;-)

Hi All

With the fence that was removed ( see here )between North and South is the road that runs from Addo Town towards the East now Closed? Does it aslo imply that the South Gate is now near Colechester?
And if all of the above is correct, when will the maps on the website be updated to reflect the above?

Looking forward to being in Addo in March

Thanks
B

Hi BDM,
The road that runs between Addo Town and the N10 (east) is still open as it is a public road. There are now 2 gates on either side of the road. You cannot enter the park via this road but could exit the park here if you needed to. Of course, the road can still be used for public thoroughfare (subject to time limit and speed limit).

There is still the Matyholweni Gate in the south of the Park, 3km from the N2 at Colchester.

The map of the addo main game area & colchester here Addo maps is updated but I have just noticed the full map is not - thanks for pointing this out. We'll update it shortly.

Ah, thanks, now I see the yellow gates marked on the map you linked.
I had thought that more of the fence was open.

What would the travel time be from Matyholweni Gate to main camp, at a Scenic pace?

We will open more of the fence in time.

Its about 36km from Matyholweni to Main camp but I would say at least and hour and a half (or longer if you happen to see somehting really exciting like a lion kill).

We are booked in to Matyholweni for 2 nights in late August and would like to do either an evening or early morning guided drive. Which is best at that time of year.? How long does it take to drive from the camp to where the guided tours start? :?

Hi Cleenpin
The early morning drives start before the gates to the game viewing area is open to the public. additionally the night game drive finishes after the gates close for the night.
Transiting through the park is therefore not possible before and after the two drives.
Travel using roads outside the park is posible but would take considerably longer. You should also consider your safety travelling during darkness.
Forum members from the area should be able to advise you better than me.
Addo is a very special place - enjoy your trip
Regards
JDW

Hi cleenpin,
To drive through the Park from Matyholweni to main camp takes about 1 and a half hours for the 36km (because of the speed limit in the park). You will first need to check the current game area gate closing times before seeing if it is possible to drive through at that time. Alternatively, you can travel on the roads outside the Park, via Paterson and the R342. This will take you about 45 minutes for 65km.
