We were caravan camping in Addo Rest Camp for the first time.

I was puzzled by the Honorary Ranger in his off road caravan and equipped vehicle camping on the adjacent plot. He was brushing his teeth, rinsing and spitting out, into the spekboom hedge between camping plots. Is this acceptable?

Also noticed two huge caravans on a plot where the man simply emptied the content of a container with shower water (containing soap etc.) on the hedge on the next door open plot.

I certainly don't want to pitch camp on other people's spit and bathwater. Not to mention the habit of some men who just "stand" somewhere behind something, relieving themselves, because they're to lazy to walk to the ablution block.

While this may not be a major thing, I cannot think that this is how it should be done.

The people next door simply broke off twiggs from the trees to start their fire. Occupants of a big camper with little white golf simply left their strong outside light on, shining in our eyes and spoiling our time sitting around the fire.

Do these people even know that they are in a NATURE RESERVE?

We have camped in Addo and also found that the camping seemed to be more important that the nature reserve.
Children rode on those horrid 'motorbikes' - one almost went under my moving bakkie - and one little git threw stones at passing cars - all left unsupervised as it was probably deemed a 'safe' area.

To make things worse, we had some tourists sitting playing music and singing loud campfire songs long into the night.. Stopped at around 11pm. Killed the experience totally. Lucky I stayed a fewdays after most of the weekend campers left and got to enjoy the real bush sounds, lion roaring, hyena and the fence singing. Some campers don't deserve to be in the wild.

I love my caravan because I sleep in my own bed with my own sheets, I use my own plates and my own knives and forks, I don't like using stuff that someone else has used so camping in there shower water and toothpaste is just not right, unfortunate for us there are always bad apples that spoil something good, as for children let me not say a word I might get banned from the forum.

Yes people do think "camping" is better than the actual natual reserve. I myself am a nature enthusiast. and part of the "nature enthusiasm" is well.. nature :) not throwing rocks at cars and causing nuisance? thats just not on.
