Good morning everyone. I am so puzzled and need to ask a question. Travelling along the old Addo dirt road to Colchester, I saw at a glance what I first thought were two kudu. However there was something wrong with the colour, so I stopped and reversed to a clear spot. What I saw was unbelievable. Two beautiful donkeys standing staring at me!!! Where on earth did they come from? I frequent Addo regularly and have never seen one before. Am I correct in assuming the the farmers left their donkeys there when Matyholweni was acquired? If so, how on earth have they escaped Gina and the gang for all this time?

SANParks guided donkey rides? (well, they are popular in Blackpool!)

Not doubting your eyesight - so it will be interesting to find out what it's all about.

Yes, indeed Sundays backpackers, there are a few donkeys left in the Colchester area of the Park from the time before agricultural land was incorporated into the Park.

SANParks' policy is to only conserve the wildlife species indigenous to the area so animals such as donkeys will be removed when rangers can find them. Donkeys are notoriously elusive which is why there are still some to be found in the Park.

Hi Megan,

I saw a couple of the donkeys this morning not very far from Roy, Nomad and Gina's youngsters.

I've seen them a couple of times and heard that they are descendants from donkeys which made it to shore from a Norwegian ship wrecked in the area. If so should they not be left to nature (Roy & Nomad) as per the desert horses?

I've never heard that story before Andrew....But regardless, SANParks' mandate is to conserve the natural biodiversity of an area and therefore only the historically-occurring indigenous wildlife. Our national parks are the representative records and samples of the natural environment (as far as is possible in our vastly changed environment). Any animals or plants or other factors which are not indigenous to this system will ultimately be a threat and competition to those that are.
If we left donkeys in the park, their numbers would increase and they would compete with the other indigenous grazers in the system.
