Last Saturday, in Addo N.P., I was watching young ellies playing and fooling around in the road. Suddenly a little one's back legs slip in the mud, next to the road, and he falls down...



When he tries to get up his front legs also slip and he falls flat on his side...





I could see that he was really in an difficult position and he was trying again and again to get up... but without success.

Then one of the smaller ones helped him...firstly he pushed him in an upright position.





Then he gave him that helping "hand". Watch how he firmly gripped that tooth and pulled himself up. This took about 2 minutes with lots of puffing and shuffling.





Then he went to the back of the ellie and start to push him so that he can get up.



I could hear him say: "Tanx pal"...and they shook hands.

What a great story, and wonderful pics......... thanks so much for posting them for us all to see.

For the past 2 months I haven't been onto the forum because hubby and I have taken on the job of managing Sundays River Backpackers, which borders the AENP on the Matyholweni side (on the old dirt road to Addo from Colchester). We haven't been to the park either, because it's work, work and work. However we have the most magnificent sightings en-route to work and back. The best was 2 young ellies (similar in size to those in the photos above). They had obviously been exploring and the herd had already moved on, over the hill. They suddenly realised they had been left behind and set sail to find mommy. It was hilarious. Trunks up, tails like antennae and they started off at a trot, but eventually were galloping, with clouds of dust behind them. We stopped and had a really good laugh at this obviously very scary, anxious moment for the two of them. We also see a herd of Eland regularly and lots of kudu. We are so privileged to see this as we drive to work. Sooooo glad Matyholweni exists now!!!
