I thought it was time to start a thread on the birds of Mountain Zebra National Park. We have recently visited the park(June 2010) and really enjoyed the birding.

We ticked off more than 50 different birds on the MZNP Bird list. Raptors seen included Verreaux's Eagle, Martial Eagle and African Harrier Hawk. We also saw a Ludwig's Bustard, a sighting which always gets us excited.

A few pix of some of the other birds seen:

Red Headed Finch

African Hoopoe

Brown Hooded Kingfisher

Spotted Eagle Owl

Golden Breasted Bunting(quite shy)

WanderW. Thanks for the bird pics. Looks like I need to put MZP on my list of places to go.

Isn't that a Cape eagle owl?

Thanx fc,koedoe and Touareg! :)

@BB - there is also a rufous form of Spotted Eagle Owl with orange eyes, and this one had fine barring on the belly and smallish feet, so we felt it was a Spotted Eagle Owl.

I thought the rufous form of SEO with orange eyes WAS the CEO!

@BB - check out Sappi's Raptor Identification Guide for Southern Africa by Ulrich Oberprieler and Burger Cillie - it states the differences and has some great pix!

Lovely pix J.J.! I especially liked your Boubou and Spotted Thick knee pix, and  about your Blue Korhaan pic! We also saw the blue korhaan but they were too far for a pic! :wall:
