Yeah - too close for my liking especially as we had our just turned 3 year granddaughter in the Land Rover with us. As we reversed he just kept coming towards us, -as Jenni said -... for quite some distance. The next morning when we went back into the park I heard our little granddaughter mutter "Stoopid elephant!, chasing our car".
Thanks to those who helped me get the pictures inserted and to Jenni for the photo's that she took of us and the ellie :)

I seem to be fated to be the bakkie behind the one in trouble with elephants. Last year in KNP a bakkie towing a caravan was in front of us and the same thing happened. That poor guy deserved a medal for reversing one helluva distance with an ellie that just would not let up. Going to Addo later this week - hope there's something exciting again. I go about 4 times a month (live at Colchester), and still have NOT seen 1 lion!!!

Hope to see you there again some time! We are going again the 14th and 15th and the following weekend 21st and 22nd. Sorry you haven't seen any lions yet - we have been lucky and seen them a few times, although only really close one time, which was a couple of weeks ago. Hope you get to see them soon.

Thanks for posting those pics guys  Wow .... never again will I been totally 'cool' amongst the Addo ellies, as this shows you can just never know!

Is he not is musth - he has a discharge from the gland between his ear and eye.

Quote:
Musth (alternatively spelled must and pronounced /ˈmʌst/) is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior, accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones - testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. However, whether this hormonal surge is the sole cause of musth, or merely a contributing factor, is unknown; scientific investigation of musth is problematic because during musth even elephants that are otherwise placid may try to kill humans.

Hi, I posted a TR on Addo two days ago. It was our first camp in Addo and we had a wonderful time. I was surprised about the "angry" ellie!! Thought all Addo ellies were calm. We saw a ellie with a collar very briefly. I took a photo, but unfortunately you cannot see his tusks. I posted the photo in my TR.
This elephant is definitely TOO near your car. He looks like one with an attitude!!

Jenismithies, we were so lucky. We saw 3 lions near Hapoor Dam and the next day a beautiful male lion near Domkrag Dam, although the male lion was too far away for a photo.

This big guy looks a lot like grumpy 'Paul' Kruger (with his stumps & collar) who recently won the fight which resulted in the death of the Park’s biggest tusker, Skukuza.

I'm sure Megan and the rangers will verify?

Saw this one about a yr ago, just before teh Gorah loop, he had been mudbathing, he ambled past, less than a meter fro the car(I couldnt reverse, as there were campervans behind me lined up!! - I drive a chevvy spark!). As he went past, mud fell from his head and ears onto teh car. Needless to say, I almost got rid of some mud myself in teh car...

Ive been charged 4 times in the last 3 years at Addo, though by trumpeting juvenile bulls, 1.5m at the shoulder. And had a few experiences of bulls just popping out the bush and walking down the road towards teh car.
I guess a real charge - ears flapping, and trunk tucked in - has yet to happen, and I deliberatly keep a respectufl distance....just in case.

A close encounter doesnt necessarily mean aggro behaviour. Ive been parked in at Hapoor in summer, and had a stream of ellies all sizes (Matriachal herds) walk past both sides of the car, and peer at me as they go past with calves. Its unnerving...

Hello everybody :D

Yes, this is definitely Paul, one of the Kruger bulls. He used to have longer tusks (when he was introduced from Kruger NP in 2002) but they have broken off over the years. Paul is in musth at the moment which explains his aggressive behaviour. He has charged a few of the Park's game drive vehicles as well.

As NickyG says, a close encounter with an Addo elephant doesn't mean that they are being aggressive as the Addo elephants are used to cars and tend to ignore them most of the time. However, always look out for signs of musth in the bull elephants: streaming discharge from the temporal gland between the eye and the ear, dribbling urine with a strong smell and aggressive behaviour such as head shaking, thrashing bushes, throwing dust around (not on themselves). Bull elephants can be in musth for a few days to a few months (depending on how dominant and they are and their age) and its best to give them more space and respect than those not in musth.

Megan, Welcome back! - and thank you for verifying that it was Paul the day before he killed Skukuza.
NickyG, I agree - we have had many close encounters like you describe and do not find them particularly unnerving :) - it was the closeness to the 'disgruntled' ellie that unnerved me, - in the photo at the top of this page we were already reversing. We had not been in his way as he had been crossing the road in front of us when he decided to turn towards us ...

We saw him again this weekend, still alone, some distance from the road ...
