Awesome! We'll try them out in December.

Now we really need to make a plan to visit this park again!

We did the 'old' one a year ago with Munchkin & SO, and it was great.

Here is the fire engine and SO driving

Sorry, a bit OT but...

BB, I read that trail is quite difficult. How did the Lux manage it? 2.7i or KZTE? I've got a 2.7i.

2.7 Senyetse.

My wife is driving doesn't that tell you?

Seriously, there were 1 or 2 occasions I had to get out and guide her, but it was mildly challenging, and not vehicle-busting.

The views were stunning, and we saw a Verreaux's eagle on the nest.

Ah THE best .
Um I'd rather not make any assumptions about your wife's driving skills  :D.

Thanks, we'll try it out in December.

The trail that Bush Baptist did is the Pienaars Pass which has now been replaced by the two new trails. Pienaars Pass was fairly difficult, especially in certain sections and we did get complaints about the difficulty of the trail from a number of visitors.

The two new trails are easy (Grade 1) but we still only allow 4x4s on them because there are some rocky sections which are only suitable for 4x4.

I've done the 4x4 trail on Monday and it was wonderful again.
In one of the brochures it is described as a grade 2 route. You will damage a grade 2 vehicle if you are not careful. My first time up there a few years back was with a Toyota Condor 4x4 that is rated as 3. The Condor was a bit low at places because of rocks.
With the Hilux 4x4 it is a more easy drive but you must always concentrate.
Always use 4x4 with low range to protect the environment. There are lots of scars on the road where vehicles go up there without 4x4 engaged. You can see the "spinning" marks.

It is beautiful route with lots of silence and views.

 Thanks Christo.

Did you see the black eagles on the nest?

@BB - I think you should take your hat off to your SO's driving skills! She obviously makes it seem so easy!

Thanx for the info Addo Elephant and Christo! Hope to do these 2 new trails soon!

Camdeboo National Park has just opened a brand new 4x4 trail in the Park, which surrounds the town of Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape.

The Koedoeskloof 4x4 Trail provides a 7-kilometre drive to the top of the mountain, providing unique and spectacular views of the landscape. The trail can be completed – with a return journey following the same track – in about three hours but the Karoo tranquillity and scenic vistas beg for a full day outing.

The turning point of the trail, which lies on top of the mountain in the Winterhoek area of the Park, is the perfect place for a picnic lunch or tea break and a picnic table is provided here.

The trail is graded between 2 on the flatter sections and 4 on the steep, rocky sections. The section of the trail just before the top of the mountain is steep and should only be attempted in dry weather.

Koedoeskloof 4x4 trail can be accessed via the Valley of Desolation gate, with the turnoff to the trail well signposted about 3 kilometres after the turnoff to the Valley of Desolation. No booking is necessary for those who wish to complete the trail and no fee is payable, apart from the Park conservation fee. Visitors can only attempt the trail in a 4x4 vehicle.

And here are some photos taken by Graaff-Reinet resident, David Lipschitz, who said the trail is "a stunning trip":

Dear forum members,

I have searched for some infos about the 4x4 routes in Karoo but I found nothing in detail.
Could somebody help me and answer my questions:
Are both 4x4 trail in Karoo NP accessible as an one day trip. Could we drive a part of the Nuweveld Trail, turn around and drive back to the rest camp? Are both trails manageable with the Toyota Hilux 4x4 which we have rent?

Thanks for your help!!

HI Mogwei

I did all the 4x4 trails in Karoo Nat Park about 5 or so years ago...I dont remember the details but I know the one course would be difficult to do in a day if you wanted to stop and enjoy some of the views.
4x4 Hilux would be perfect for the trip as vehicle clearance was the most important although 4x4 engagement was definitely necessary a lot of the time although we were in in 4x4 the whole time to minimize wear and tear on the roads.
The course we did was also for one direction only.

Hope this is of some help...keep well and enjoy!
