There are two 4x4 trails which link to each other and link on to the existing tourist roads. A 4x4 Toyota will be fine for the trails.

The Afsaal Trail is 12.7km in total, leading off the Potlekkertjie Loop (this doesn't include the distance you need to travel from the rest camp to start the trail). The Nuweveld Trail is 40.3km, not including the 5.3km part of the Afsaal Trail onto which it links, or the distance you travel to get to the trail. Therefore, you could do the longer trail within a day - or alternatively, you can stay over at the Embizweni Cottage which is accessed via a 3.7km road off the Nuweveld Trail.

The trails are done in a one-way direction (starting at the side closest to Doornhoek picnic site) so you would not be able to turn around. You should be able to complete it in one day, provided you start early.

Does anyone have any pictures of the Embizweni Cottage, or pictures taken on the trial themselves?

Just note that the park map shows it as 90 something kms. I have pointed this out to the park staff.

Has anyone done 4x4 routes in Karoo since they were changed?

Yes BB we did both the new Afsaal and Nuweveld Trails in December. The Afsaal trail is as I mentioned very easy. Things would change if it rained but it is not challenging in the least, most 4x2 and soft roaders would manage easily.

The Nuweveld Trail is quite nice but also failrly easy with a few rocky sections and 2 or 3 rocky river crossings. I would not attempt it in a vehicle with low ground clearance.

Both are mentioned on teh Karoo website as being grade 1 trails.

But the best part of the trails is the scenery and solitude! We also saw a lot of wildlife - but the animals are very shy not seeing very many vehicles.

These two trails are free but the old 4x4 trail must be paid for.

This past weekend my Mom and Dad went to the Karoo Nat Park to hand over a photo of my Grandfather(Kowie Pienaar) busy drilling a hole for dynamite that he used in building the Pienaars Pass. They also handed over a copy of the original title deed of the farm Stolshoek(our farm) to the Park Manager. It makes me feel so proud that my history is forever cemented in the Karoo Park. Last year I had the privelige of driving the Pass(that took my Grandfather 7 years to build) on my 40th birthday. The first time that I drove it on my own and it was very emotional, but an undescribable feeling. I only wish I knew him better as he passed away when I was 2.
