Who are or were Marion Baree and Carol to get these waterholes named after them?

I have no clue, but Marion Baree must have been an elephant lover as the eles in that part of the park love her waterhole, and the southern boubous enjoy the bushes in front of it!
Carol must have some bovine origins, because we saw buffs at her waterhole every day last week

Remember that these used to be old farms. Maybe they were named by the farm owners.
Megan: Any info here?
Is there a book, pamphlet, info brochure on names and their Origin in the Addo Elephant National Park???

Marion Baree: named after the old farm on which it was located before incorporation into the Park

Carol's Rest: Carol Erlank was the wife of a previous Section Ranger (head ranger) in the Park. Tragically she died in a car accident. This was her favourite waterhole in the Park and her ashes are scattered here.

Thanx for that info Megan :)
Would love to get hold of a book on all the names in the park.
Any idea if such a thing is available?

As far as I know, there is no such book. Perhaps we can look at incorporating it into the official guide once we do a new version.

Megan: thats a great idea. Everybody always likes to know the origin of place names in parks and it makes for very interesting reading.

Can anyone please tell me what's being done at Marion Baree - it looks like the original waterhole has been levelled and there is now just a small, round, cemented (I think?) place to drink out of? Thanks.

Very observant carolynn!

The waterhole was modified to a small cement pan for two reasons:

1. Elephants can now utilise it for drinking but not for mud-bathing and bathing. This means elephants will spend less time in the area and will have less impact on the vegetation surrounding the waterhole than e.g. a waterhole like Hapoor.

2. There is fairly steep terrain around Marion Baree and the creating and enlargement of a mub bathing area by elephants would eventually lead to erosion.

The new structure in use, shortly after completion.
Look at the damage to the steel plate by the ellies.

Megan

On my short day visit in July, I noticed that your excellent new little cement dam is too small for any medium sized herd of elephants -- there were about 15 elephants hanging around, with 5-10 actually standing around/in the trough, with tremendous stress and tension created by the lack of water.
For drama, this is good, but for jumbo ulcers, not. One elephant actually got so agitated he shoved another bull so hard that he fell on the ground and struggled to get up again while the other one shoved some more with his tusks. This procedure happened a few times in the 10 minutes I was there. Is there perhaps not a strong enough flow of water into the trough?

God bless
