The first time we saw the little ellie behind the group, we asked a ranger to ask the lady in the ellie researce vehicle what is happening here. She confirmed that the mother have abandoned her, but not the group. This was very strange to the researce lady as well. But as the little caught up with the group, the other ellies did not look to happy with the little one.

The next day we saw 3 ranger vehicles parked next to the road. we stopped and saw the little one completely on its own with not an ellie in sight. My wife was very upset and we left. that was the last time I saw the little abandoned ellie.

Maybe Megan no what happened to the ellie?

Hi AntonA,

This baby elephant was abandoned by its mother. The calf did follow the herd for a while and managed to survive by drinking water and eating some dung and plants, but it did get weaker and weaker. It has not been seen for a while so we presume that it has died.
This is not the first case we have seen this year of elephant calves dying or being abandoned and it is most likely because of the very dry conditions we have had this year and in 2008 which have had an effect on the vegetation and the condition of all the animals.
