Spent the night at the chalets right on the fence line on 7 August 2008. We heard what i thought, could have been a leopard kill the sound of the victim was a warthog there was also a commotion from hyenas, in amongst the noise i THOUGHT i heard the sound of a leopard, could any body confirm this? (long shot)

I wasnt there but the Hyena Den is close by and they and lions do kill...the "lone" leopard apparently has had its spoor seen this last year out and about but no visual sighting I am told..its collar is not transmitting a signal as well I believe so while it was possible it was a saw rasping leopard you heard it was probably something else just by the scarcity factor of Leopard in the game enclosure alone but thats my opinion thats all and I wasnt there...lovely sound a leopard sawing at night nearby...Sounds of Balule Kruger Park and hopefully now Tsendze. Maybe one of the Addo Staff heard your kill and would know exactly what it was as a leopard kill and sounds at night are very distinctive as they hassle sleeping baboons in Kruger and surrounds. Warthogs are in burrows at night and I have only experience of lion digging them up but obviously other predators may do the same thing

Don't mean to spoil the fun, but not everything you hear in Addo main camp in the night is real

Tape recordings of hyena and Jackal are not uncommon

Lets hope for your sake it was a leopard..

A recording played in camp at Addo would be a first for me. Have stayed there a good few times, and never heard any.

Billy - I am sure Megan will shed some light on this for us - the possibility of a leopard being close to the camp. They are very elusive creatures. I once read of someone who lived in a National Park in a certain area for 10 years, and they heard the resident leopard, often, but never got to see him!

Have spend many a LATE night in the Addo camp and NEVER NEVER heard of a recording being played. This is un thinkable

Some of the sounds heard from the main camp at night are used to lure Hyena's for research purposes. However that doesnt mean that what Billy heard wasnt a real kill. Addo is a wild place and it sure isnt safe on the game side of the fence at night.

Anyway I am sure Megan can clear this up, or burn me for saying the word "recording".. oops

Addo is great at night, if you are there try make your way to the main waterhole to see the rhino's that come down at around 8-9pm..

Or a lion male at 21:00......

Thats what I am thinking a leopard there in that section is rarer than the lost Feral Pigeon I saw sitting quite happy in the veld but totally confused on Mbalala Loop a month ago

I must "assume" that you stay in this area and have undisputed information that this happens from the main camp.
Is this to lure the hyena to the camp since the reshearches do not go into the game area at night?

Morning BB - that is braai time I have normally seen them at the waterhole area from about 11 at night and they seem to like the waterhole in front of the safari tents. Ask MN she enjoys standing on the balcony late at night

Late at night ...all night ..through the night..and then I cannot get up in the morning But it has paid off..seen the rhino many a time !!! Imagine if I saw that leopard.....
As for recordings being played at night time....to quote BB...not when I am there !!!!!

do you get up in the morning, more like early afternoon oh you seem to arise about 9am but become comp-us mantas about noon



hang you would be wide awake and so would the rest of the camp
