Can you please confirm how many lion are in the Main game area. I have heard that it is 6 (4 males and 2 females)

I thought there were 9 lion in main game area. I saw 5 of them in one morning back in September... if that was 5 out of 6 I would be very surprised.

Fayroush could you perhaps check that your information is correct? WarthogB said in September that there are 9 as well. Have 3 been moved out of the main game area recently?

My apologies all. The numbers I quoted were for those spotted during the census. The full figures are: Addo has 9 lion in main camp. This amount is based on available prey and size of territories. Two females are not on contraception.

Thanks for the information. Does the 9 in the 'main camp' include the ones in Nyati? I thought there were 3 females rather than 2 - Aardlam, Gina & Josie?

There are three females in main camp - Gina, Aardlam and Josie.

The nine I referred to do not include the Nyathi population.

All females have received contraception for a two year period. Both Josie and Gina have been removed from the contraception project. They could have or will give birth soon.

With 9 lions and 3 of them being female and at least 2 of those 7 remaining being sons of one of the females - isn't there a risk of inbreeding? :hmz:

I agree - 6 of the 9 lion are descendants of Kamkwa (Gina, Norman, Zwaai, Josie, Melvin & Gibson)... and of those, Zwaai, Josie, Melvin and Gibson have Gina as their mom.
Surely that's not going to be great for the genetic diversity?

Thank you so much for the informative posting. Really pleased that there are 9 lions, and especially that there may be cubs soon. Should make for very interesting game viewing apart from elephanats, tortoises and kudu...

Hope to see some of those cubs next year with my school kids.
God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Had two awesome sightings of Roy and Nomad on Wednesday and Saturday. 20 and23 November 2013.
On Wednesday they were seen eating a kudu in the new section of the park.

It seems that Nomad was injured in this hunt, he was bleeding behind the ear and was seen limping. On Saturday he was still bleeding behind the ear and limping. Lets hope he heals soon.

LS - you'll remember this chap as being somewhat younger looking. He and his brother are really growing up now
